New Modes of Physicianship: A Collective of Experts
Having set forth a future state for the healthcare ecosystem, we can now turn to the physician who will operate within it: not a weaker version of the machine, but the bearer of a different and complementary intelligence.
Recommendation
Recommendation. Recast the profession from an association of professionals into a collective of experts. Frame the physician's value propositions around four identities, drawn on flexibly across a career and laid over specialtes: technoscientific, consilient, transcendent, and global physician identities. Overhaul the profession’s serial gateways, because a profession that concedes recall while still selecting, licensing, and certifying for it remains committed to a competition (human versus machine) it has already lost. Retool assessment, including ones incorporating scenario simulation, to evaluate development of the human factor. Codify the physician’s authority to overrule the collective, including its machine members, albeit with an obligation to document the reasoning.
