The Transcendent Physician
If machines absorb the technical core of medicine, the profession's center of gravity moves to the one capacity a machine can simulate but not possess.
Recommendation
Recommendation. Commit to healthcare systems and mechanics that foster authentic caring. Elevate medical virtue as a core competence and shape the environment to foster it. Nurture relational, moral, reflective/wisdom, existential/spiritual, and expressive human qualities at all stages of training and practice.Protect time, because caring and curiosity are eroded by efficiency-driven schedules. Preserve the physician as decision-maker in grey zones, setting an explicit consequence threshold for reliance on machine intelligence. Educate to critical thinking. Consider complexity science as a working competence rather than as a general outlook, so that a physician can say which kind of unpredictability is before them and act accordingly. Reserve certain encounters for human presence by policy rather than preference: the diagnosis that changes a life, the conversation about stopping treatment, and the hours around a death.
